Temperatures in Phoenix Heating Up Above 100 Degrees

Temperatures broke 100 degrees Fahrenheit today in Phoenix. It is that time of year again in the Valley when shaded parking spaces at the mall bring a premium.

The century-mark temperatures arrived only one day later than normal.

The average first day of the year for temperatures to reach the one hundred degrees mark in Phoenix is May 2nd. In 2016, temperatures also crossed the threshold a few days behind schedule on May 4th.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), afternoon temperatures in the Valley regularly reach a 100-degree daily high by May 31st. Valley residents experience, on average, 109 days per year when temperatures equal or exceed 100 degrees.

Unseasonable Temperatures

What was the earliest day ever for temperatures to first reach 100-degrees in the Phoenix metro? March 26, 1988. Things were politically hot in Arizona at that time, too. Governor Evan Mecham was removed from office by impeachment proceedings 8 days later. He was replaced by Secretary of State Rose Mofford.

I was reminded to look at May weather statistics for the blog last week. I spotted this memorable custom Arizona license plate above at the Paradise Valley Costco and stopped the owner. She has owned the cherry red 1971 Volkswagen Beetle for over 45 years. Well done.

I drove around in a Volkswagen Rabbit I shared with one of my roommates, and it didn’t have a roof. It doesn’t rain much in L.A., but when it did, it was utterly miserable. – Jon Hamm, actor, known for his role as Don Draper in the TV series Mad Men
